An opportunity of a lifetime lies ahead for Gqeberha-born academic extraordinaire Daniel Erasmus after his recent selection as one of the Rhodes Scholar-Elect 2024 scholarship recipients.

Erasmus said while he was excited about the opportunity he still had not fully comprehended the immensity of the accomplishment.

The St Andrew’s College alumnus, who already has a litany of accolades under his belt, will enjoy fully funded, full time, postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford in England.

“A little more than a week has passed since it was awarded, and it still feels surreal,” he said.

“The important thing for me is that it broadens the possibilities to do things that matter to me and others too.”

The prestigious award covers two to three years of full-time study.

“I hope to use my time in Oxford, and with its community, to develop and build myself in ways that will ultimately assist in contributing to the field of law in SA.

“Where exactly that lands me is unclear, but the idea is to be of use to the public interest.

“I want to be open to a range of areas that involve law.”

Armed with a Bachelor of Business Science, specialising in economics with law from the University of Cape Town (UCT), awarded in 2021, Erasmus is now completing the final year of his Bachelor of Laws degree.

Erasmus has also appeared on the dean’s merit list, and received the Juta Law Prize and the Class Medal for Corporation Law in 2022.

St Andrew’s College deputy head of academics, Graham Creese, said Erasmus was also a member of the Golden Key Society for Academic Excellence and as a member of the UCT Moot Society he had won the Kate O’Regan Inter-Varsity Moot Competition in 2022.

Erasmus, who matriculated from St Andrew’s College in Makhanda in 2018, was named the Dux Scholar and achieved seven subject distinctions.

He was also included on the IEB Commendable Achiever’s List for placing in the top 5% in five or more subjects nationally.

While at school, Erasmus played first team cricket and hockey and was considered a stalwart of the cross country club.

Besides his academic and sporting achievements, Erasmus received his Associate Performance Certificate from Trinity College London in cello performance, was a key member of the string quartet and the orchestra and was selected for the National Youth Orchestra in 2018.

He achieved the Gold Standard of the President’s Award in 2018 and was awarded honours for academics, music, and community engagement, as well as colours for leadership and service.

“Daniel is, at heart, a courageous and deeply philosophical young man who believes in serving others and is committed to addressing societal challenges,” Creese said.

“He was elected head student of the Kopano residence at the end of 2019 and chaired the University Residences Committee, he was subsequently elected as a sub-warden in the Kopano residence for 2021, taking responsibility for the transformation portfolio.

“During his tenure, he was instrumental in ensuring a prioritised return to university residences following hard lockdown and initiated student ‘gender marshals’ training in educational, preventive, and first-responder techniques to combat gender-based violence,” Creese said.

Erasmus continues to serve in many spheres, including as a writing tutor at the Legal Writing Centre, a note taker for the UCT Disability Services, a project researcher for the Equal Education Law Centre, a peer mentor for the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, a member of the Advocacy and Legal Research Committee for the Black Lawyers Association Student Chapter, and as part of the KENSO educational project for SHAWCO Education.

“A deep-thinking, compassionate, intelligent, philosophical, humorous, and engaging young man — we do not doubt that Daniel will flourish at Oxford, relish the academic challenge, and be profoundly enriched by the social and cultural expedition on which he is embarking,” Creese said.
