The body of a man who drowned in the Knysna Lagoon on Wednesday afternoon is yet to be found.

National Sea Rescue Institute [NSRI ] spokesperson, Craig Lambinon said the incident had happened at 3.30pm near the NSRI rescue station.

Lambinon said NSRI rescue swimmers, police,  community Police forum members, Knysna law enforcement officers and SA National Parks rangers had responded and several role players were still conducting searches in the area on Thursday.

“Five local men  were swimming and one appeared to get into difficulty in the water,” he said.

“His friends threw an NSRI pink rescue buoy towards the man, but he was unable to reach it.

“One of the friends launched into the water to try to help, but he got into difficulty himself and was forced to return to the rocks .

“They reported that their friend had disappeared underwater,” Lambinon said.

“Despite the extensive search, there remains no sign of the missing man, but they are continuing an ongoing search operation.

“Thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing man in this difficult time,” he said.
